Shuyao Huang is a New York–based artist whose work investigates perception as an active process shaped by the interaction between visual stimuli and the viewer’s cognitive and emotional systems. Influenced by Buddhist sutras, she explores the interdependence of fullness and emptiness while balancing freedom with precision. Her large-scale compositions, assembled from smaller units, create shifting relationships between color, surface, form, and movement. Through repetition, subtle variation, and layered color relationships, she creates paintings that invite prolonged engagement and active looking. 

Huang’s work has been exhibited throughout New York and commissioned by the NYU Langone Art Program. Recent exhibitions include Still Becoming(Solo exhibition) at Art Cake, Perfect System at A Space Gallery, Handle with Ease at Yang Collective, 30 Under 30 Works on Paper at Soot, and Stop Motion at Voltz Clarke Gallery. Her work and practice have been featured in New American Paintings, Our Culture Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, Timestamp, and ArtDaily. Huang received an Honorable Mention Award from Teravarna Art Gallery in 2026. She holds a B.A. in Painting and Fine Art, with highest honors, from Pratt Institute and an M.A. in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
